About
Thank you for stopping by Keeping History on Two Wheels. I'm Andy Crutchfield, your host and guide to uncovering the lesser-known historical tales that often slip through the cracks of our everyday lives. Many of us recall the standard history lessons from our school days—stories of the American Revolution, the Louisiana Purchase, the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, and pivotal places like Gettysburg.
One such overlooked chapter is the significance of the taking of Savannah by Sherman during the Civil War, a moment that played a crucial role in bringing the conflict to a close. Often overshadowed by larger events, the capture of Savannah was not as effortless as commonly believed. In reality, a small fort, Genesis Point (Fort McAllister), posed a significant obstacle that nearly thwarted Sherman's advance. Had Sherman not succeeded in taking Fort McAllister, his troops could have faced the grim fate of starving within view of their much-needed supplies, halting their progress dead in its tracks.
At Keeping History on Two Wheels, we aim to shed light on these overlooked stories and weave a richer tapestry of our shared past. Join me as we explore these historical gems that continue to shape our present-day understanding of the world around us.
It is true that during the Cold War era, the United States strategically positioned Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) across the Midwest as part of its defense strategy. While these ICBMs were meant to serve as a deterrent, there were numerous incidents involving them, ranging from minor accidents to near-catastrophic events.
One of the lesser-known incidents occurred in 1980 when Arkansas faced a potential nuclear disaster due to a grave error involving an ICBM. The situation was a stark reminder of the high stakes and risks associated with nuclear armaments during that tense period of history.
In 1965, a tragic occurrence in a silo resulted in the loss of 53 lives within a single minute, leaving only two survivors behind. This event underscores the dangerous nature of the work undertaken by those involved in maintaining and operating ICBMs during the Cold War.
These incidents serve as sobering reminders of the inherent risks and complexities involved in managing nuclear weapons and maintaining peace during a tumultuous time in history.
